Asterix and Obelix XXL3: The Crystal Menhir is an action adventure game set in the world of the classic comic series. Players control the two Gaulish heroes as they battle Roman forces and uncover the secrets of a powerful artifact across multiple regions of the empire.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on brawling combat against groups of Roman soldiers in linear levels. Basic attacks handle most encounters, while special moves draw from an energy meter that refills through successful hits or pickups. The Crystal Menhir serves as a versatile tool with four distinct forms. The stone form delivers shockwaves that stun or launch enemies and smash objects. The ice form slows or freezes Romans in place. The fire form ignites nearby items and forces enemies to scatter while providing light in darker areas. The magnetic form adds further utility for interacting with the environment and foes. Exploration involves navigating Roman-occupied territories, completing side missions, and locating hidden objects. Some sections feature garrison-style challenges where death resets progress, requiring careful crowd control and positioning.
Game Modes
The game supports a single-player campaign that follows the full story from start to finish. Local two-player co-op allows a second player to join as the other hero at any time through a drop-in system, with both characters working together on combat and navigation. The co-op experience emphasizes complementary actions between Asterix and Obelix. No online multiplayer options exist.
Story and Setting
The adventure begins in the small Armorican village where daily life continues despite Roman occupation of Gaul. Getafix receives a warning letter from the high priestess of Thule about a looming threat, prompting the retrieval of the Crystal Menhir. The narrative takes players through various Roman-controlled lands while introducing familiar faces such as Vitalstatistix, Cacofonix, and new characters with humorous names. The plot revolves around reactivating the menhir by collecting its missing shards and resolving the danger to the village.
Exploration and Collectibles
Levels encourage thorough searching for side objectives and hidden items scattered throughout each area. These elements provide additional goals beyond the main path and tie into the overall progression. The design mixes open exploration segments with structured combat encounters and simple environmental puzzles that leverage the menhir's abilities.
Is It Worth Playing?
Reception has been mixed, with critics noting solid local co-op fun alongside repetition in solo play. The game suits players who enjoy straightforward brawlers and want to share the experience with a friend or family member on the same screen. Fans of the Asterix comics will appreciate the humor, character appearances, and faithful setting. Those seeking deeper mechanics or variety may find the structure limited after several hours. It remains available on PS4 and PS5 with no ongoing seasonal content or major updates since launch.
