LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a LEGO action-adventure game that places players in control of Batman and a large cast of DC Comics heroes and villains. The story follows the Caped Crusader teaming up with the Justice League to confront Brainiac, who uses Lantern Rings to shrink planets and add them to his collection. The adventure expands beyond Gotham into outer space and various Lantern worlds, blending combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving in the signature LEGO style.
Gameplay
The game uses a third-person perspective where players switch between characters to overcome obstacles. Combat involves basic attacks and special abilities that match each character's powers, such as flight for Superman or ring constructs for Lantern Corps members. Puzzles require specific skills like melting gold objects with heat vision, digging through surfaces, or activating technology panels. Collecting studs serves as the main currency for unlocking new characters and upgrades.
Space sections introduce zero-gravity movement and ship-based combat for the first time in the series. Players navigate Lantern worlds including Zamaron and Odym while battling enemies and solving environmental challenges. The Gadget Wheel lets select characters like Batman and Robin switch suits on the fly for new abilities, such as demolition or sensor functions. Hacking computer terminals shifts gameplay into a virtual space with maze navigation, arena fights, and timed races.
Hub areas like the Batcave, Hall of Justice, and Justice League Watchtower provide free-roam exploration. These locations contain shops, trophy rooms, side activities, and customization options for heroes and vehicles. Character creation allows mixing parts from unlocked figures to build custom playable options.
Game Modes
Story Mode guides players through the main campaign with fixed character selections per level. Completing these levels unlocks Free Play Mode, where any unlocked characters can be used to revisit stages and access previously restricted areas for collectibles.
VR Missions appear as optional minigames in the Batcave and Watchtower laboratories. These include top-down spaceship shooters, simple racing tracks, and other arcade-style challenges that award gold bricks upon completion.
Local co-operative play supports up to two players on the same screen, allowing shared control during levels and hub exploration. No online multiplayer features exist.
Characters and Story
More than 150 unique characters populate the roster, drawn from the Justice League and a wide range of DC heroes and villains. Big LEGO Figures such as Cyborg and Solomon Grundy join the lineup alongside standard-sized figures. Each character brings distinct abilities that influence combat effectiveness and puzzle solutions.
The narrative incorporates plot twists through disguises, Brainiac's mind control effects, and the influence of Lantern Rings on familiar personalities. Players visit iconic sites including the Hall of Justice and the Batcave while traveling to alien environments tied to the Lantern Corps.
Is It Worth Playing?
Reception for LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham has been generally positive among players who enjoy the series' formula of light combat, humor, and extensive collectibles. The large character roster and variety of hub activities provide strong replay value for completionists. Local co-op adds appeal for shared sessions with family or friends.
The game suits fans of DC Comics and previous LEGO titles who appreciate puzzle-platforming with a humorous tone. Those seeking deeper narrative complexity or competitive online modes may find the experience more limited. As a complete single-player package released in 2014 with no ongoing seasonal updates, it remains available for straightforward purchase and play on PS4 without additional live-service requirements.
