The Crew 2 is an open-world racing game that places players in control of cars, motorcycles, boats, and planes across a recreation of the contiguous United States. The experience centers on progressing through multiple motorsports disciplines while exploring varied terrain from cities to mountains and coastlines. Vehicle handling changes noticeably between types, and instant switches between land, air, and sea keep the action flowing without loading screens.
Gameplay
Core play revolves around completing objectives in different disciplines to earn followers and advance a career. Players select from hundreds of vehicles and customize performance parts such as engines, suspension, and tires. The open world supports free roaming alongside structured events, with progression tied to fan counts that unlock new disciplines and higher-level competitions. Rubber-band AI appears in races, and the arcade-style physics emphasize accessibility over simulation depth. Up to seven friends can join sessions for cooperative or competitive play in supported activities.
Game Modes
Eight primary modes organize the content. Season Stories deliver narrative-driven playlists tied to current seasonal themes. Street Racing covers Street Race, Drift, Drag Race, and Hypercar events. Offroad includes Rally Raid, Motocross, and Rallycross. Freestyle focuses on Aerobatics, Jetsprint, and Monster Truck challenges. Pro Racing features Powerboat, Touring Car, Air Race, and Alpha GP. Live Xtrem Series requires leveling up and gathering followers to unlock stages. Live Summit runs weekly thematic playlists of activities. Live Battle supports direct online competition with up to eight players. Street Racing, Offroad, Freestyle, and Pro Racing form the backbone of career advancement, awarding followers, currency, and loot.
Hybrid Mode and Multiplayer
The game supports both always-connected online sessions and a separate offline experience through Hybrid Mode. Players choose the mode at launch when connected to the internet, or the game defaults to offline without a connection. Online saves can be exported to offline storage, though the two remain independent and some features such as Live Summits, multiplayer events, leaderboards, and certain purchases stay unavailable offline. This setup preserves access to the core open-world driving and career events even without an internet connection.
Current State
Regular updates continue to add vehicles, events, and seasonal content. The service remains operational with active connectivity and in-game store functions. The addition of Hybrid Mode in late 2025 expanded options for solo play while retaining the original online community features for those who prefer them.
Is It Worth Playing?
Critics gave the game mixed or average scores at launch, citing strengths in scale and variety alongside weaknesses in driving feel and some repetitive elements. Player reception on major platforms trends more positive, with many highlighting the range of vehicles, the size of the map, and the freedom to switch between racing styles. The title suits those who enjoy arcade open-world racing with frequent events and vehicle diversity rather than pure simulation or tight narrative focus. The Hybrid Mode now makes it viable for extended solo sessions without requiring constant online access. Those seeking constant live-service competition or deep single-player storytelling may find it less engaging, while fans of varied motorsports across a large playground will find substantial content to explore.
