Yoshi's Crafted World is an action platformer developed by Good-Feel and released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. Players control Yoshi through handcrafted stages built from everyday materials like cardboard, fabric, and paper cups, collecting items while navigating side-scrolling environments with depth-based movement.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on precise platforming combined with exploration in layered stages. Yoshi runs, jumps with a flutter ability, performs ground pounds, and uses his tongue to swallow enemies before turning them into throwable eggs. Egg throws allow free aiming across the entire screen, targeting objects in the foreground or background layers. Stages incorporate forward and backward movement in select sections, creating a 2.5D feel where depth adds puzzle and navigation elements.
Each level features a front side focused on reaching the goal while gathering coins, red coins, and Smiley Flowers. After completion, the flip side becomes available, reversing the viewpoint so players search for up to three Poochy Pups to return to the finish line under a time limit. Hearts restore health, and completing objectives like collecting 100 coins or finishing with full health rewards additional Smiley Flowers used to unlock new areas on the world map. Costumes collected from in-level machines or amiibo provide varying levels of armor protection against damage.
Game Modes
Two primary difficulty options exist. Classic mode delivers standard platforming with normal enemy damage and limited flutter jumps. Mellow mode, toggleable at any time via the pause menu, equips Yoshi with wings for infinite fluttering, reduces damage taken to one heart per hit, and doubles the eggs produced from eaten enemies. This option also reveals hidden clouds and provides vibration feedback near Smiley Flowers.
Local two-player co-op supports drop-in and drop-out play on a shared screen. Each Yoshi operates independently with full abilities, though one player can ride the other to gain unlimited eggs while the bottom Yoshi delivers an enhanced ground pound that creates a shockwave. Only one player needs to reach the end with sufficient health for certain rewards. The game supports Joy-Con controllers in various configurations as well as the Pro Controller.
Exploration and Collectibles
Progression involves traveling across themed islands on a world map, with Smiley Flowers serving as the key currency to open new zones and boss encounters. Levels emphasize thorough searching for hidden items, including 20 red coins per stage and special Poochy Pups on the flip sides. Capsule machines in each area dispense random handicraft costumes using collected coins, adding variety to repeated playthroughs. Boss fights follow a straightforward three-hit pattern against enemies like Baby Bowser and Kamek.
Is It Worth Playing?
Yoshi's Crafted World suits players who enjoy relaxed platforming with strong emphasis on visual creativity and item collection. The local co-op and Mellow mode make it particularly accessible for families or younger players, while completionists find replay value in hunting every flower, coin, and costume across the front and flip sides. Reviews have been generally favorable, highlighting the charming craft aesthetic and satisfying exploration without heavy pressure. Those seeking intense challenge or fast-paced action may find the experience lighter on difficulty. The game remains available as a complete title with no additional seasons or live updates required.
