Barely Afloat is a first-person co-op action adventure game for one to four players on PC. Crews take a single small motorboat on one continuous journey from a mountain pond downriver to the sea, facing rapids, storms, ice, and other hazards that the vessel was never designed to handle.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on keeping the boat afloat and moving forward while managing damage and environmental threats. Only one player sits at the wheel to steer, which makes responsibility for collisions or missed maneuvers clear to the entire group. The remaining players move freely on deck and handle tasks such as bailing water with a bucket, hammering planks over hull breaches, or using tools like a harpoon gun mounted at the bow.
The harpoon connects to a winch that serves multiple purposes. Players can drag the boat off gravel bars, pull it over mud banks, shift obstacles such as a sunken coal barge, or reel in a teammate who has fallen overboard. Hull damage occurs when rocks or other impacts punch holes; each patch remains in place for the rest of the trip, so repeated collisions leave the boat covered in temporary repairs.
The river itself presents rhythmic and unpredictable dangers. Cannons fire in patterns that crews can learn and time. Boulders tumble from slopes, cave ceilings drop debris, lightning targets the tallest crew member, and low branches can sweep the driver overboard. Occasional shark jumps add further surprises. Certain sections require players to leave the boat and work on land, such as sawing through fallen trees, rebuilding walkways, retrieving keys, or clearing log jams by hand.
Loot appears at quiet landing stages in chests that shake and release items onto the deck. Useful finds include hull shields, anchors, an umbrella that absorbs lightning strikes, and a temporary turbo outboard motor that delivers short bursts of speed at the cost of its own durability. Every dock along the route saves progress, so sinking returns the crew to the last checkpoint with the boat in its patched state.
Game Modes
The game supports online co-op for up to four players through a host-controlled session. Friends can join an ongoing trip at any time. Solo play is fully supported, though tasks that normally require two pairs of hands take longer to complete alone. There are no separate competitive or versus modes; the experience remains focused on cooperative navigation and survival across the full journey.
Progression and Customization
The trip spans nine chapters and thirty-five docks, passing through varied environments including rapids, locks, a flood, a frozen reservoir at night, a fog marsh, and a lighthouse coast at sunset. The final trip report tracks statistics such as who spent the most time in the water. Each player selects a potato character with options for hats, mustaches, shades, eye patches, and varieties ranging from Russet to Purple Majesty. A cigar accessory allows players to blow smoke rings or risk coughing if held too long.
Is It Worth Playing?
Barely Afloat delivers a distinctive co-op experience built around one boat, one steering wheel, and constant physical tasks that force communication and role division. The permanent nature of repairs and the mix of onboard and land-based challenges create a consistent sense of progression and consequence across the single long trip. Players who enjoy teamwork-focused indie adventures with light humor and straightforward mechanics will find the potato crew and shared mishaps engaging. Those seeking fast-paced combat or multiple distinct modes may prefer titles with broader variety. The game is available on PC and supports both group and solo sessions without additional requirements.
