Train Sim World 7: Neckartalbahn: Heidelberg - Neckaraelz Route Add-On delivers a detailed railway simulation experience set on a historic German line. This PC add-on recreates 51 kilometres of the Neckartalbahn as it operated in 1974, running along the Neckar Valley between Heidelberg and Neckarelz. Players manage mixed traffic with both steam and electric traction on passenger and freight duties amid riverside scenery, stations, and yards that reflect the era before many modern changes took hold.
Gameplay
The core loop centres on operating locomotives and trains with realistic physics and controls. The BR 23 steam locomotive receives dedicated improvements to driving and steam simulation, allowing players to handle firing, boiler management, and performance under load on passenger services and occasional freight. Switching to the BR 140 electric locomotive shifts focus to tap-changing controls and overhead power management for a contrasting experience on the same route.
Route details include 15 stations, freight yards, and branches that operated differently in the 1970s or have since disappeared. Players follow the river through varied terrain while managing local stoppers, pick-up freights, and scenic expresses. Rolling stock features period-appropriate coaches such as Bm 234 and Abm 225 m-Wagen units alongside silberling types, plus freight wagons including Gs216, Kbs442, Ucs908, and Leichtbaukesselwagen models. An AI-only Heidelberg Strassenbahnen tram adds background activity at key locations.
Handling emphasises true-to-life performance, suspension, and cab detail across both steam and electric traction. Tutorials in the Training Center introduce systems gradually, while route tasks provide structured objectives during exploration in Free Roam.
Game Modes
Training Center offers accessible tutorials that cover locomotive controls and route procedures. Scenarios present focused challenges with specific goals, while the authentic timetable supports regular services including Guard Mode for passenger operations.
Journey Mode connects training, scenarios, and timetabled runs into a progressive experience. Free Roam allows unrestricted exploration of the route and available trains at any time of day.
Additional timetable layers from separate add-ons expand services with locomotives such as the BR 218, E194, BR 103, BR 111, and upcoming BR 212 and K枚f II units. Freight Hauler compatibility lets players manage cargo movements independently of fixed schedules. The add-on also supports Livery Designer, Formation Designer, and Scenario Planner tools for custom content shared through the Creators Club.
Route and Historical Context
The Neckartalbahn section dates to the 1860s with full completion along the river in the late 1870s. Double tracking arrived early in the 1900s, followed by station relocations and electrification that reached full operation by the 1950s. In 1974 the line still mixed steam and electric traction on key corridors toward W眉rzburg and Heilbronn, with Heidelberg Rbf and the Sch枚nau branch included in the recreation.
Scenery captures the long-lost form of stations, yards, and branches, providing a snapshot of operations before later infrastructure changes. Riverside views and valley terrain form the backdrop for both daytime and nighttime services.
Is It Worth Playing?
This add-on targets players who enjoy precise train handling and historical German railway settings. The inclusion of the first German steam locomotive in the series, paired with updated steam physics, appeals directly to enthusiasts seeking that traction type. Mixed electric duties with the BR 140 and period rolling stock add variety without requiring other purchases for core content.
Those who prefer structured progression benefit from the combination of tutorials, scenarios, timetable services, and Journey Mode. Free Roam and Freight Hauler support suit players who like open-ended operation. The route remains in active development with further layers planned, indicating ongoing support after release.
Overall the package suits dedicated simulation fans interested in 1970s German rail operations and the specific locomotives featured. Casual players may find the detailed controls rewarding once tutorials are completed, while those seeking broader modern networks should consider compatibility with existing add-ons for expanded services.
