Emotion Mask is a 2D puzzle-platformer that places emotion switching at the center of its action, indie, casual, racing, adventure, and early access experience on PC. Players take control of a boy wearing a blank mask and cycle between three emotional states to reshape movement, interactions, and the surrounding environment in real time.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around switching between Calm, Joy, and Anger to solve platforming challenges and uncover hidden routes. Calm highlights concealed paths and alters platform visibility. Joy improves agility with higher jumps and faster movement. Anger enables dashing through breakable walls and obstacles. These changes also shift the character's appearance, environmental colors, backgrounds, and visual feedback effects.
Progression combines precise jumps, wall jumps, dashes, shard collection, and timed emotion switches. Levels reward reading the environment and experimenting with combinations rather than following a single path. Keyboard and controller support includes customizable bindings, while optional minimap, full map, checkpoint selection, and fast travel features aid navigation without removing the challenge of exploration and puzzle solving.
Game Modes
The current focus remains on solo challenges that test platforming precision and creative problem solving through emotion mechanics. Players advance by collecting shards and reaching goals while adapting movement and interactions on the fly. Level creation serves as a major mode, offering a full editor with brush, rectangle, fill, erase, select, and move tools for shaping terrain.
Additional tools allow placement of spawns, goals, checkpoints, hazards, breakable walls, and decorations. Moving platforms support up to eight path points with custom patterns and emotion-based visibility. Creators switch between overview and visual views, preview levels in each emotion state, validate designs, and playtest from multiple starting positions. A built-in pixel art editor and support for importing PNG or JPG images enable custom terrain tiles, auto-joining sets, and emotion-specific backgrounds.
Community sharing extends the experience through publishing validated levels to the Workshop system, where others can browse, search by tags, subscribe, favorite, and play creations. Local and Workshop levels stay accessible even during temporary offline periods. A multiplayer racing mode remains in active development for a future update, with the present release centered on solo play and creation tools.
Level Creation Tools
The editor provides a complete workflow beyond basic placement. Terrain shaping uses standard drawing tools alongside selection and movement options. Emotion shards, hazards, and decorations integrate directly into designs. Background customization applies separately to each emotional state, allowing distinct visual styles that match the mechanics.
Color adjustments and layer combinations help creators develop unique aesthetics. After validation and playtesting, levels receive titles, objectives, tags, and preview images before publication. This system supports both quick experiments and detailed community contributions without requiring external software.
Is It Worth Playing?
Emotion Mask suits players who enjoy puzzle-platformers that emphasize experimentation and creativity over linear progression. The emotion-switching system creates varied movement and interaction possibilities within the same levels, encouraging multiple approaches to each challenge. The included editor and community sharing add long-term value for those interested in building and exploring user-generated content.
Support for multiple languages and controller options broadens accessibility. As an early access title that began as a Global Game Jam project, the game delivers a focused solo experience with tools for ongoing creation. Those drawn to 2D platforming combined with level design and sharing will find substantial depth in the verified mechanics and features.
