Immortal Path is a single-player strategy indie roguelike card game set on PC that draws from the myths of Shan Hai Jing. Players manage three core resources while building decks across mythological chapters and facing escalating challenges rooted in the Five Elements system.
Gameplay
Combat centers on three interlocking resources rather than a single mana pool. Essence fuels card plays and refreshes each turn, but reaching zero triggers a Broken Defense state that doubles incoming Vitality damage. Vitality serves as both health and the primary damage type received. Spirit powers advanced secret arts that combine Vitality and Spirit damage. These resources interact through conversions such as turning block into Essence or relics that allow burning Vitality to offset Essence shortages. Overspending Essence creates risk for the next turn, forcing players to weigh steady play against aggressive bursts.
Each of the 265 cards carries one of five attributes: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, or Earth. These attributes influence counter-effects, synergies, and relic activations. Concentrating on one attribute supports burst strategies, while balanced distributions yield generation bonuses. Adjusting attribute focus transforms the same deck into different builds. Relics number 111 and alter core rules, such as carrying block forward or enabling free first cards. Equipping specific sets of three triggers Resonance effects like Great Completion of the Five Elements or Hidden Dragon Bloodline, opening parallel build paths.
Six playable cultivators start with distinct decks: Balanced Five Elements, Sword Cultivator, Body Cultivator, Wine Immortal, Alchemist, and Formation Master. Defeating major bosses unlocks additional characters. Enemies display their next action in advance, allowing informed responses. A glossary of 67 terms clarifies mechanics during play.
Game Modes
The core experience unfolds as a roguelike campaign divided into six chapters drawn from Shan Hai Jing myths. Each chapter introduces unique mechanics tied to its guardian, such as shielding Jingwei through heavenly thunder stages or shattering seals with countering attributes in N眉wa's chapter. Beyond the standard boss lies a hidden encounter activated only by special conditions, which unlocks an alternate ending and changes battle rules. The final confrontation involves the Lord of the Long River and time manipulation.
Seven difficulty tiers scale the challenge from Mortal through Tribulation Transcendence. Higher tiers introduce modifiers like higher shop prices and elite enemy pressure starting at Golden Core. Runs emphasize deck construction from card synthesis, enchantment, and removal at shops, alongside relic collection. Permanent progression comes from 54 achievements that grant cross-run upgrades in categories including Dao Foundation and Heavenly Mandate, with 21 passive bonuses and 14 special mechanics. The Past Fortune system logs full run details for review after each attempt.
Progression and Replayability
Unlocking new cultivators expands starting options, while achievement-based upgrades provide lasting advantages even after failed runs. Shops and relic synergies encourage experimentation with attribute weighting and Resonance combinations. The 108 cards with unique animations and the full collection encyclopedia support repeated exploration of mechanics. Difficulty progression rewards mastery, with Tribulation Transcendence designed for players who have already succeeded at lower levels.
Is It Worth Playing?
Immortal Path suits players who enjoy strategic deck-building roguelikes with layered resource management and thematic depth drawn from ancient myths. The interlocking systems of resources, attributes, and relics create meaningful decisions each turn, while hidden bosses and alternate endings add replay value. Permanent upgrades from achievements ensure progress carries forward, making repeated runs feel rewarding rather than purely punitive. Those seeking single-player experiences focused on cultivation themes, Five Elements interactions, and high-difficulty mastery will find the structure engaging. The game remains in development and is not yet released, so final balance and polish await confirmation upon launch.
