Protocell is an action indie game for PC in which players control a single living cell that escaped from a laboratory in the Mariana Trench. The core experience centers on growth through mutation rather than collecting external weapons or gear. Every ability and upgrade develops directly from the organism itself, creating a survival loop built around movement, automatic attacks, and careful management of power versus risk.
Gameplay
The basic loop requires constant movement to dodge waves of enemies while the cell attacks automatically. Levels progress rapidly, and each power increase presents a choice among mutations that alter how the cell functions. Projectiles, orbiting drones, auras, shields, and regeneration represent just some of the options available across 52 distinct mutations. Pushing combinations to their limits can trigger fusion into one of 18 evolutions, each introducing its own distinct mechanic.
Every mutation adds to an instability meter. Crossing the threshold initiates a meltdown that gives the player only twenty seconds before the cell explodes. This system forces ongoing decisions about how aggressively to pursue upgrades. The cell itself is generated from a 64-bit genetic code that determines silhouette, membrane, nucleus, appendages, colors, and animation details in real time. The same code can be copied and shared so other players can recreate identical organisms in their own sessions.
Game Modes
The primary mode sends the cell through eight distinct worlds. Each world features unique creatures, environmental hazards such as corrosion or burning zones, and a boss encounter. A separate mode called the Primordial Abyss consists of 100 floors divided across ten layers, each sealed by an exclusive boss. Progress and harvested DNA carry over between attempts in the Abyss, allowing gradual preparation for deeper runs.
Between expeditions, time is spent in the laboratory. DNA collected during runs funds the creation of new protocells, cross-breeding across five ranks, advancement through a 41-node DNA tree, and the preparation of genome recipes that activate during active play. Ancestral Hosts can also be challenged to obtain organelles that equip the colony.
Progression and Laboratory Systems
DNA serves as the central resource for expanding options outside of runs. Players develop multiple protocells, refine them through the DNA tree, and craft recipes that can be deployed mid-expedition. The laboratory also supports collection of organelles from defeated Hosts. The full campaign concludes with a multi-act epilogue, credits, and a final scene rather than ending on a simple victory screen.
Controller and keyboard support are built in, along with a Codex that functions as an in-game guide covering mutations and the bestiary. Dozens of missions and 41 achievements, including a Platinum, provide additional structure for players who want directed goals.
