Rival Waves is a tower defense game with action and strategy elements on PC. Players act as the hero defending a lane while competing to destroy the rival's King first. The core loop combines direct combat at the front lines, skill drafting on level ups, gold management for personal power or sending enemy waves, and tower placement to hold ground across 21 waves that progress through four seasons before a final survival night.
Gameplay
Each match begins with a choice of one of six heroes, each bringing distinct playstyles and towers. The Warrior focuses on holding the front line, the Mage wields fire, frost, and arcane abilities, the Archer commands a hawk, the Engineer deploys turrets and gadgets, the Priestess channels storm and grace, and the Necromancer raises the dead. Every level up presents skill cards to draft, upgrade, and evolve. When the bar fills, one skill can infuse into another to cast both effects together. Four ultimates per hero allow lane-turning moments, such as clearing waves or rescuing a struggling position when timed correctly.
Bosses appear every five waves, including the Ogre, Stone Golem, Demon, Dragon, and the Lord of the Night on the final night. Their marked ground attacks demand dodging before counterattacking. Between waves or even mid-wave, players visit the Merchant to buy and sell potions and gear from limited slots. Towers are called down and leveled to anchor the lane, with each hero contributing unique variants. Gold also funds sends of creeps that carry the player's banner to overwhelm the rival lane, boost income, or summon bosses against the opponent.
Game Modes
Rival Waves supports multiple formats for different group sizes and preferences. Duel offers 1v1 matches against a human rival or AI. Alliance enables 2v2 play where two heroes share one lane and an ally can revive a fallen teammate at the cross. War scales to 4v4, with four heroes defending a single lane against four rivals. Online options include partying with friends, teaming against AI, or creating custom lobbies. Ranked play tracks ratings on a leaderboard. Allies can coordinate ultimates to trigger Resonance, which shortens cooldowns, shields the King, and applies hero-specific bonuses.
Progression and Features
Runs feature 27 sends, eight of which are bosses, plus a King that can be upgraded. After the wave 10 boss, a Master's Chest appears. Blessings and Pacts introduce run-altering rules. The game includes 48 Steam achievements and support for 12 languages. Approximately 200 skill nodes, 100+ evolutions, and skill infusions expand build variety across the six heroes and their 24 ultimates. A small indie team at Alania Studio continues balancing the game based on player feedback.
Is It Worth Playing?
Rival Waves suits players who enjoy tower defense blended with hero action and competitive PvP or co-op elements. The mix of drafting builds, sending waves, dodging boss attacks, and coordinating with allies in modes like Alliance or War provides depth for both solo AI matches and ranked play. Those seeking a fresh take on lane defense with direct hero control and persistent development from a responsive indie studio will find the systems engaging. Availability on PC makes it accessible for strategy fans looking for multiplayer competition alongside singleplayer options.
