Sauna Grudge is a roguelike deckbuilder that turns the Finnish tradition of sauna sitting into a competitive endurance contest. Players build and refine a deck of cards while managing two key resources, Sisu for physical endurance and H盲py for social dignity, across runs that take them through various Finnish locations. The goal remains consistent: outlast every rival on the wooden benches until only one person remains.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on deck construction and tactical positioning inside the sauna. Cards represent actions such as throwing l枚yly to increase heat, swinging the vihta, drinking restoratives, or opening the forbidden door. Heat gradually adds unwanted cards to the deck, forcing players to adapt as the environment works against them. Opponents telegraph their intentions, allowing for reactive plays, though multiple specialists can appear together in tougher encounters and complicate decisions.
Positioning adds another layer. The upper bench delivers greater heat and respect but demands more resilience, while the lower bench offers safety at the cost of pride. Players can shift seats at key moments or force rivals downward. Two meters track progress: emptying either Sisu or H盲py causes a competitor to leave. Recovery options exist, as do retaliation cards and the ability to maintain composure while quietly relocating.
Outside the main deck sits PERKELE, a limited emergency action available when standard planning fails. Uses are restricted to maintain balance. Relics collected during runs enhance cards or provide new effects, and Sausage Points earned at the end of a run fund permanent upgrades between attempts. Three playable characters start with distinct stats and card preferences: Pekka, Sandra, and Jarmo each approach the same sauna challenges differently.
Game Modes
Runs follow a roguelike structure where death ends the attempt but carries forward permanent upgrades purchased with Sausage Points. Ten distinct Finnish destinations appear across a run, each featuring its own sauna layout, rival encounters, and local events that alter the rules temporarily. Difficulty scales through Normal, Ascended, and Godlike settings, with the latter two unlocked after completing earlier challenges. Multi-opponent benches and escalating heat create varied pressure across these runs without altering the fundamental single-player focus.
Characters and Progression
Each of the three starting characters brings unique starting decks and stat distributions that reward different strategies. One might favor aggressive heat generation, another social maneuvering, and the third a balanced approach. Cards and relics found mid-run combine with these foundations, while the post-run Sausage Points system lets players invest in lasting improvements to health, card quality, or new options. This creates a steady sense of progression even as individual runs remain unpredictable due to deck bloat from heat and the need to read opponent plans accurately.
Is It Worth Playing?
Sauna Grudge suits players who enjoy roguelike deckbuilders that emphasize resource management, positioning, and reading opponent intentions over pure combat. The cultural framing and adult humor provide flavor without requiring prior knowledge, and the AI-assisted artwork supports a focused mechanical experience. Those who appreciate tight decision-making around endurance meters and bench movement will find repeated runs rewarding through the upgrade loop and escalating difficulties. The game remains in active development as an indie title, with its core systems already delivering the intended blend of strategy and tension.
