The Other Half of the Turn, Finally Returned to the Player
In the past, turn-based strategy games often defined the enemy turn as spectator time鈥攂ut today, it can also be a moment of decision.
In Wendtale, every attack you make during your turn charges your character's Echo鈥攁 resource that flows across turns.
During the enemy turn, when you come under enemy attack, you can spend Echo to activate "Countermeasure".
Countermeasure abilities fall into three categories:
- Strike: Attack the target before it strikes; if you defeat the target, its attack is negated
- Defense: Brace before the target attacks, reducing damage taken
- Counterattack: Retaliate after the target attacks; if you have already been defeated, the counterattack fails
This is not a QTE, nor a passive reaction鈥攊t is proactive strategy built on anticipation.
In tight, fast-paced battles, managing your Echo gains and losses wisely, and maintaining continuous advantage and initiative across turn transitions, is the secret to victory.
Know Yourself and Your Enemy, and You Shall Never Be Defeated
Every enemy has targeting preferences: close range, high HP, low Echo, and so on. Stockpile Echo for your key characters in advance, and when the enemy attack falls, you will be ready with three responses鈥攐r three traps.
However, enemies can also prepare Countermeasures to respond to your attacks. You can preview the specific effects of their countermeasures and make your choice: meet them head-on, or sidestep their edge.
Adapt to Circumstances, Keep the Big Picture in Hand
The battlefield is dotted with "Environment Units"鈥攁ctivate them at the right moment to aid you in every battle.
At the same time, watch out for "Terrain Effects" that bring negative consequences, and maneuver to avoid them.
Journey into the Abyss, Unveil the Fragmented Tale
Venture into the unknown, join forces with companions you've yet to meet, and defeat powerful enemies.
Through fragmented vignettes, uncover the stories that once unfolded upon this land.
